What is the impact of the gig economy on women who work in it and will it help narrow the gender gap?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Today is International Women\u2019s Day \u2013 a global day to celebrate the economic, cultural and political achievements of women.\u00a0 This year\u2019s focus is to highlight the need to accelerate gender parity.\u00a0 According to the World Economic Forum\u2019s 2017 Global Gender Gap Report, Global gender parity is over 200 years away!\u00a0 What impact does the gig-economy have for women who work in it and will it widen or narrow the gender gap in the workforce?<\/p>\n<p>There are estimated to be around <a href=\"http:\/\/modernworkmag.co.uk\/article\/women-gig-economy-uk-taking-backwards-step\/1512726060\">1.1 million gig economy workers in UK today<\/a> \u2013 that is roughly the same number of people who are employed in the NHS (the fifth biggest employer in the world).\u00a0 Out of these 1.1 million gig\u00a0 economy workers,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thersa.org\/globalassets\/pdfs\/reports\/rsa_good-gigs-fairer-gig-economy-report.pdf\">31% are women.\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>Women are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thersa.org\/globalassets\/pdfs\/reports\/rsa_good-gigs-fairer-gig-economy-report.pdf\">half as likely<\/a> as men to have tried a form of gig work.\u00a0 The gig-economy and its continued growth (the number of self-employed has risen from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/finance\/jobs\/12106318\/The-self-employed-will-overtake-the-public-sector-with-the-gig-economy.html\">8.7% in 1975 to 12% in 2008 and 16% in 2016<\/a>) is going to be crucial to ensure that moving forward there is gender equality within the workforce.<\/p>\n<h1><strong><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\"><\/a><\/strong><a style=\"font-size: 16px;\" href=\"#_ftnref2\" name=\"_ftn2\"><\/a><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref3\" name=\"_ftn3\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A recent report by Harvard University states that in the last decade the number of women working in the gig-economy has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/manondefelice\/2017\/03\/15\/why-women-can-and-should-cash-in-on-the-gig-economy\/#6f742ed1fb37\">outgrown<\/a> that of their male counterparts. \u00a0The gig economy enables men and women to benefit from more flexible ways of working and greater freedom in their working patterns.\u00a0 In fact, this could be why the number of mothers working as freelancers has <a href=\"http:\/\/modernworkmag.co.uk\/article\/women-gig-economy-uk-taking-backwards-step\/1512726060\">increased by 79% between 2008 and 2016<\/a>.\u00a0 People working in the gig economy can to some extent choose the hours they work, often when and even where they work and this empowers them to achieve a work\/life balance to suit their lifestyle.\u00a0 This is especially advantageous for those who have to care for loved ones (young and the old) \u2013 they can fit both work and care-giving into their schedules.<\/p>\n<\/div><div href=\"http:\/\/modernworkmag.co.uk\/article\/women-gig-economy-uk-taking-backwards-step\/1512726060\">93%<\/a> of women say it is hard to combine a successful career with caring responsibilities.\u00a0 Being a gig worker has allowed them to continue to advance their careers or at least keep their skills up-to-date and maintain relevant experience, whilst also balancing the Their fulfillment is reflected in the quality of work they produce for our clients.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-3 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"background-color: rgba(255,255,255,0);background-position: center center;background-repeat: no-repeat;padding-top:0px;padding-right:0px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-top: 0px;border-width: 0px 0px 0px 0px;border-color:#eae9e9;border-style:solid;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-4 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:20px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\" style=\"transform:translate3d(0,0,0);\"><p>Companies who have adopted more flexible working practices have provided opportunities for highly skilled employees to \u2018lean in\u2019 and \u2018out\u2019 as and when their personal circumstances allow.\u00a0\u00a0The upside is that employers are able to retain experienced and highly skilled employees without having to recruit new talent.\u00a0 It is no surprise that 70% of workers and 68% of employers believe that the majority of the workforce will be employed in an agile capacity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/manondefelice\/2017\/03\/15\/why-women-can-and-should-cash-in-on-the-gig-economy\/#6f742ed1fb37\">by 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other benefits of \u2018gig\u2019 work mean that there is often an added advantage that a premium is paid for the uncertainty of the work.\u00a0 However, as in the recent Pimlico Plumbers case, \u2018gig\u2019 work can also erode employee rights.\u00a0 Being classed as a self-employed gig worker you are not entitled to sick or holiday pay and for women you are only entitled to a <a href=\"http:\/\/modernworkmag.co.uk\/article\/women-gig-economy-uk-taking-backwards-step\/1512726060\">maternity allowance <\/a>rather than statutory maternity pay (meaning there is a six week period when you do not receive 90% of your earnings).<\/p>\n<p>There has also been some evidence that the gig economy has compounded gender stereotypes in the types of work that women are employed in.\u00a0 There are a disproportionate number of women in the gig economy in the administrative, care and domestic help sectors and although only making up 16% of the gig economy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thersa.org\/globalassets\/pdfs\/reports\/rsa_good-gigs-fairer-gig-economy-report.pdf\">95% of Uber drivers and 94% of Deliveroo<\/a> are men, whereas in the transport and storage industries this figure is around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/employmentandlabourmarket\/peopleinwork\/employmentandemployeetypes\/datasets\/employmentbyindustryemp13\">80%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>IT platforms which are the backbone of the gig economy are cited as compounding discriminatory preferences.\u00a0 Clients purchasing gig work often access personal profile pages which contain pictures and demographic data and reviews.\u00a0 Clients purchasing \u2018gigs\u2019 and their reviews are often subjective and can be biased \/ discriminatory.\u00a0 Whilst this can be true for both men and women, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2018\/01\/the-gig-economy-could-increase-workplace-sexism\">\u201cMartin and Nicole\u201d<\/a> story highlighted the impact that gender can have in the workplace.\u00a0 Initially inadvertently then purposefully swapping email signatures, Martin noticed the different attitudes and tone of client contact when he swapped his email to come from Nicole. (Martin and Nicole were both employed at a small employment services agency and initially due to an error and then purposely for two weeks swapped their email addresses \u2013 as a result Martin noticed there was a marked change in tone and attitude towards his emails as \u2018Nicole\u2019 \u2013 Martin was in \u201chell\u201d as clients were condescending and questioned everything he suggested, whilst Nicole &#8211; as \u2018Martin\u2019 &#8211; had the most productive time of her career).<\/p>\n<p>The nature of gig work is that it is short-term and project based.\u00a0 The incentive for women to work in the gig-economy and step off the career ladder can adversely affect the number of leadership roles filled by women.\u00a0 Currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/282693\">only 14% of top executives are women<\/a>.\u00a0 Women are unable to reach senior positions on short-term roles and this erodes the ability for women to influence day to day working practices as part of a leadership team.<\/p>\n<p>The arguments both for and against the gig economy are on the whole, gender-neutral.\u00a0 The points that can be considered to negatively affect women are also prevalent and mirrored in the current work economy.\u00a0 With around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thersa.org\/globalassets\/pdfs\/reports\/rsa_good-gigs-fairer-gig-economy-report.pdf\">350 000 female \u201cgiggers\u201d<\/a> in the UK today and evidence pointing to the fact that the gig economy is likely to grow further, it seems as though there are significant challenges for both men and women gig workers in the future.\u00a0 The status of gig workers needs to be defined \u2013 are they \u201cworkers\u201d and thus entitled to employee benefits or \u201cself-employed\u201d? \u2013 we eagerly await the outcome from the Pimlico Plumbers case.\u00a0 Also, IT platforms can be reviewed so that they do not compound gender and racial inequalities.<\/p>\n<p>The positives of the gig-economy should help narrow the gender gap.\u00a0 Working flexibly on days\/times and terms to suit the individual enabling the workforce to \u201clean in\u201d and \u201cout \u201c significantly disrupts the current working paradigm.\u00a0 This \u2018agile\u2019 challenge has been a major step in the right direction to deconstruct the \u2018career ladder\u2019 model which has been cited as holding back the progress of women in the workplace. \u00a0The increasing influence of the gig-economy and adoption of new flexible working patterns will force the \u2018career ladder\u2019 model to change.\u00a0 The new model will undoubtedly be more flexible and embrace what to date has been considered \u2018time out\u2019 caring responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Whilst the \u2018driver\/ rider\u2019 gig economy in particular needs governments to effectively regulate it, the trend of gig working and benefits it brings to women, plus the continual removal of traditional gender barriers, hopefully means that gender parity is much closer than 200 years away.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-4 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"background-color: rgba(255,255,255,0);background-position: center center;background-repeat: no-repeat;padding-top:0px;padding-right:0px;padding-bottom:0px;padding-left:0px;margin-bottom: 0px;margin-top: 0px;border-width: 0px 0px 0px 0px;border-color:#eae9e9;border-style:solid;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-5 fusion_builder_column_1_3 1_3 fusion-one-third fusion-column-first\" style=\"width:33.333333333333%;width:calc(33.333333333333% - ( ( 4% ) * 0.33333333333333 ) );margin-right: 4%;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:20px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-6 fusion_builder_column_2_3 2_3 fusion-two-third fusion-column-last\" style=\"width:66.666666666667%;width:calc(66.666666666667% - ( ( 4% ) * 0.66666666666667 ) );margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:20px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\" style=\"background-position:left top;background-repeat:no-repeat;-webkit-background-size:cover;-moz-background-size:cover;-o-background-size:cover;background-size:cover;padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\" style=\"transform:translate3d(0,0,0);\"><blockquote>\n<p>About the author, Tamsin Boyle<\/p>\n<p>Tamsin is one of B2E Consulting&#8217;s Capability Leads and has worked with us since 2015 .
